Steven is a partner at Parry Field Lawyers in our commercial team actively supporting clients across the country leading a team of people.  Having qualified in Zooland and worked for more than a decade on corporate transactions worth billions of dollars while based in London, Tokyo and Sydney, Steven returned home in 2016.

That return led to writing several legal books that have been downloaded many thousands of times such as the Start-ups legal toolkit, Social Enterprises in New Zealand and Capital raising for founders. This has resulted in Steven becoming a sought after advisor, speaker and IOD Facilitator (he hosts their podcast Board Matters). He has a unique blend of Impact expertise and focus on purpose driven organisations and innovative legal structures such as:

  • Founders

Steven helps keep founders safe with bespoke advice on the right legal structures, multi million dollar capital raisings and contracts of all types.

  • Companies

Steven assists many companies with takeovers, IP, capital raisings, contract reviews and provides input to the regulator which sets the financial standards of NZ as a member of the XRB advisory panel. He is a frequent contributor to print media (Stuff, Spinoff, Idealog) and he is host of the Seeds podcast with 380+ conversations, founder of the Seeds Impact Conference (100 speakers).

  • Charities

Steven has assisted many hundreds of charities, churches, incorporated societies and ‘for purpose’ groups ranging from very large Tier 1 charities to those just beginning, including setting up around 50+ in 2023 (approximately one a week). Creator of the Charities Healthcheck, which has contributions from 100 other leading industry experts, Steven is also a frequent speaker in this area, providing input to the regulator as part of the Charities Services Sector Group. He wrote a Charities handbook and is currently writing parts of the revised NZ Charities text for Lexis Nexis.

  • Overseas Entities

Steven assists many foreign entities looking to set up in New Zealand with their setting up here and getting things right. He is nationally recognised as a leading expert on governance and is a busy facilitator for the Institute of Directors teaching people about legal risks and how to stay safe. He hosts the IOD podcast “Board Matters” which is in its second season now.

It was indeed a pleasure dealing with Parry Field – They were very professional, went above and beyond and was immensely helpful in both setting up a property trust, incorporating a charity and also with settling a new commercial property purchase. Thank you so so much for all your help“- Jebra Abraham

Outstanding service! The team at Parry Field have been incredibly supportive, guiding our Not-for-Profit organization through a change of legal status. There were several complications that would have been impossible for our organization to navigate alone. The team are clearly passionate about the Not-for-profit sector, going above and beyond with their time, but keeping the billing very affordable. Ngā mihi nui.“- Steps Forward

Steven, Yang Su, Tasha and their team at Parry Field provided clear, efficient, professional and very sound legal advice to our group on a pro bono basis as we applied to incorporate as a charitable trust.
There were numerous steps, many forms to fill and quite a lot of co-ordination needed among the trustees so it was reassuring and very welcome to Parry Field’s support throughout. I really appreciated how even after our application had been approved, Yang Su sent us helpful checklists and guidance docs so we could confidently navigate the next stages as we set out to achieve our trust’s charitable aims.
Thanks heaps Steven and team. The process would have taken much longer and seemed far harder without all your support and advice.“- Dhilum Nightingale
