Kia ora All,
This update is full of links to resources and upcoming things going on for your radar.
First up, the very interesting conversation on the state of the economy with Shamubeel Eaqub is now up here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_Wgv5Ke9ZU or as episode 399 of Seeds here and feel free to forward this email on to others it may interest – slides attached too which are fascinating…
We talked historical economic cycles, 📊population decline and its implications, austerity + people not buying basics like fruit 🍊veges 🥗🌽and cancelling their house insurance, how we measure ‘success’ in a Western conception vs other more holistic approaches such as in Te Ao Māori, degrowth, 🏡superannuation contribution rates, community housing, among many others. We ended by talking about love. Have a listen!
For those in Christchurch the next in person networking impact lunch is live to register here on 27 August with Barry Coates from Mindful Money sharing – and Aucklanders, will have an impact lunch planned for later this year so connect on LinkedIn to see posts about it!
Seeds just got to episode 400! A special one as it is this interview by two children aged 9 of the Climate Change Commission Chair Dr Rod Carr. Know any schools that might like to hear it for their children?
Often you won’t know “what happens next” when helping a stranger but got the rare chance to find out – sharing as this story may encourage you like it did for me.
I’m sure you’d do the same – let’s all keep looking out for opportunities to help each other!
- The Volunteering Changemakers Hui ‘Engage, Unite, Ignite’ is for all volunteer managers and leaders of volunteers to come together, share in learning and be inspired. Tūao Aotearoa Volunteering New Zealand invites you to join us in Christchurch on 30 September 2024. The one-day hui will focus on volunteer management and practice, valuing volunteering, and approaches to volunteer engagement. With plenty of networking opportunities, collaboration and great speakers and content, you will be inspired with new ideas and practices. Speakers include the Hon Louise Upston, Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, and international speaker Tony Goodrow, President of Better Impact. There is an optional Masterclass on the prior afternoon, 19 September, with two topic choices. Read more on the conference website.
- Was in Wellington a few weeks ago and at a lunch shared with about 25 charities about the option of Impact Investing and how that might work to gain access to funding – see attached the paper on this. I may run this again in Auckland and Christchurch as seemed to generate lots of interest.
- I’ll be sharing on Governance for Churches and Christian groups at this in all three larger cities in August/September – see attached email and below, be great to see you there! “Christian Savings is passionate about seeing churches and charities thrive and governance is one area that is often under-resourced. This year we’re rolling out our Governance Conference, tackling issues such as leadership succession, fruitful stewardship and how those in governance should best measure success.”
- Chairs play a crucial role in shaping community impact. Join Community Governance Aotearoa for a full day programme with keynote speakers, thought leadership and workshops exploring the challenges we face as Chairs of community organisations. Opening networking event will be held the evening prior, 12 August. https://communitygovernance.org.nz/talks-events/empowering-chairs-transforming-communities-live-event/
- I was asked to share this and happy to do so – “Did you know that in 2024, people are still being accused of being witches, then tortured and killed? In the highlands of Papua New Guinea, one woman is fighting against the increasing number of witch-killings, also known as “sanguma” or sorcery accusation related violence (SARV). Her film and story, MARIMARI, is coming to the big screen across New Zealand as part of the Whānau Mārama New Zealand International Film Festival this August and has an impact campaign running alongside it, including opportunities for those interested to run private fundraising screenings. Find out more about the film and impact campaign here: linktr.ee/marimarifilm”
- I was in Wellington recently for the release of a report Ākina has released analysis on social investment here: https://www.akina.org.nz/news/social-investment-white-paper
- Here is a video of me chatting to CEO Nicola Nation about it.
- Banqer are doing some good work – check this out: “Managing your finances can be intimidating and cause stress. Most Kiwi adults have never received formal financial education. Banqer just launched their “Money Month Challenge” an opportunity for adults to get free access for two weeks to their simulative platform so you can build your money skills and win prizes! It is completely free – register here”
