Grant Adams
Grant Adams

Grant is Chair of Partners at Parry Field Lawyers.

Grant has a particular interest in working with the owners of businesses, which often involves asset planning, trusts and personal asset protection. Grant has been a partner since 1987 and specialises in Commercial/Business law.

Grant began practising law with a large Christchurch legal firm in 1980 and then transferred to Parry Field Lawyers in 1986, becoming a partner the following year.

Grant has advised on the sales and purchases of Businesses, Farms and the sale and purchase and protection of Intellectual Property. He has helped restructure business entities as well as build asset protection and succession structures for individuals. Grant has some significant clients operating in farming, tourism and the IT industries.

He is past chairman of Burnside High School Board of Trustees and is presently chairman of St Christopher’s Community Trust, a trust associated with St Christopher’s Anglican Church in Avonhead, Christchurch, where Grant is also involved. Grant is also a director of Avonhead Rotary Club.

In his spare time Grant enjoys squash, mountain bike riding and debates with friends over anything from philosophy to sport. When asked what he enjoys most about working as lawyer he replied: “Getting to understand clients and what they really want to achieve, and helping them get there”.

Kris Morrison
Kris Morrison

Kris leads our corporate, technology and startup focused advisory team. Complementing this, Kris also leads our migrant team composed of 5 Mandarin speakers and 2 Japanese speakers which assists with overseas investment into New Zealand as well as immigration matters. He also acts for a number of not for profit charities, social enterprises and schools.

Having spent two years in Wellington as Research Counsel to a Judge, Kris frequently provides expert opinion and advice on curly questions that arise for Parry Field Lawyers’ Clients. He has written on New Zealand property law and regularly advises on contractual and property issues. He is a Board Member of Code Club Aotearoa and the chairman of the Christian Schools Network in Christchurch and the Emmanuel Christian School Board of Trustees, is a Board Member of Code Club Aotearoa, and is also actively involved in his church.

He has also tutored in Contract Law at Victoria University of Wellington and Tort Law and Land Law at the University of Canterbury.

Kris and his wife, Louise, have six children and are kept busy in their ‘spare’ time running around after them.

Pat Rotherham
Pat Rotherham

In early 2014 Pat merged his long standing practice, Rotherhams Law (formerly Gough & Irving) with Parry Field Lawyers and is one of our most recently appointed Partners. Pat has a particular interest in asset protection and succession planning through the use of appropriate structures such as trusts, companies and relationship property/property sharing agreements.

Pat has broad based experience in business and property acquisitions and disposals and he has represented individuals, family trusts and private companies in assisting them to fulfil their long term plans. He works closely with accountants and related professionals to ensure his Clients’ needs are understood and achievable.

For over 15 years Pat has been the co-ordinator of the Legal Referral Centre within the Christchurch West Citizens Advice Bureau. He has written articles for local organisations and community publications, and has given many presentations on various legal topics to client groups as well as to community organisations and local retirement villages.

Pat is married to Shelly who worked with him in his practice for 16 years prior to the merger with Parry Field Lawyers and he has two adult children in the banking industry. When commitments allow, Pat is a keen road cyclist and mountain biker, tennis player and less keen runner, as his dog Max will confirm. He enjoys music, reading, theatre and travel in his spare time.

Paul Owens
Paul Owens

Paul works in our property and commercial team and assists clients on a variety of property and commercial transactions including subdivisions, business / commercial property acquisitions and sales. He is also heavily involved with managing and supervising a large portion of the firms residential conveyancing.

Paul joined Parry Field Lawyers in January 2009 following three years practicing in another Christchurch law firm and a year living and working in the United Kingdom with his wife Elissa. Paul’s focus is ensuring client’s receive a quality service based around providing accurate and thorough legal advice in a timely manner. He likes to make sure clients are fully informed each step of the way. Paul’s friendly and relaxed demeanor make him enjoyable to deal with and readily available to discuss any matters.

In his spare time Paul enjoys spending time with his young family and has a passion for the outdoors – particularly hunting, any type of fishing and the occasional round of golf.

Tim Rankin
Tim Rankin

Tim is a key member of our property and commercial team. Tim has particular expertise in commercial and residential subdivisions, having been involved in some of Canterbury’s larger recent subdivisions.

Tim acts for a wide range of commercial and not-for-profit clients in the areas of business acquisitions and disposals, commercial leases, franchises and charitable trusts, and frequently advises directors and shareholders on corporate governance issues.

Tim seeks to provide clients with common sense, pragmatic advice that is, importantly, correct. He has led our property team in seeking solutions to the often complex issues arising out of the recent Canterbury earthquakes in a manner that is clear, timely and reassuring to clients.

After commencing his legal career with Parry Field Lawyers in 1996, Tim spent five years from 2002 in Dublin and London at a major Investment Bank. He returned to New Zealand and Parry Field Lawyers in September 2007, becoming a partner in October 2010.

He and his wife Christine have three young children who are almost always a delight to them and who, along with a love of all things sport and coffee, and church and charitable commitments, fill out what is left of his spare time.

Peter van Rij
Peter van Rij

Consultant Peter, focuses on business and company matters including commercial problem solving, negotiations, litigation, leases contracts, intellectual property and software, superannuation, finance and securities, international contracts, supply and distribution agreements.

Peter joined Parry Field Lawyers in 1975. He has extensive civil litigation experience and Peter has appeared for clients at the Privy Council twice on commercial issues.

Peter is a director of several companies and the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Tait Electronics Limited. He is also actively involved in his church and has been a member of the Christian Schools Trust – Middleton Grange School for some time.

Steven Moe
Steven Moe

Steven is a member of Parry Field’s corporate and commercial team and focusses on international companies investing in New Zealand as well as work for New Zealand companies in their domestic and overseas operations.

 

Steven has had an international career prior to his return to New Zealand as for 11 years he worked for a large international law firm (Norton Rose Fulbright) in Tokyo (4 years), London (3 years) and Sydney (4 years). Prior to his time overseas he also worked for 3 years in Wellington for a major national firm.

 

His experience in-house, including one year at Caltex in Sydney and two years at Mitsui in Tokyo, provided Steven with an invaluable insight into clients’ drivers and requirements and the benefits of clear, timely and practical advice. He adopts a commercial and pragmatic approach in advising clients while maintaining the highest standard of legal advice.

 

Steven studied at Canterbury University in Christchurch and he and his wife made the choice to return to New Zealand to be part of the rebuilding phase following the 2011 earthquakes. Outside of work he enjoys family history and has written several books on different ancestors as well as a history of the Church he attended in Sydney. He and his wife Ellie are kept busy by their four young children.

Doris Tu
Doris Tu

Doris joined Parry Field Lawyers to specifically service the needs of migrants in the areas of commercial, property, business and trust law. She joined in May 2012 after completing her Masters in Law (International Trade, Law of the Sea and International Environmental Law) at the University of Canterbury.
Prior to that, Doris was practising in a law firm in the North Island in general practice for three years and was a member of the Manawatu District Law Society in 2008 to 2009.

Doris is fluent in Mandarin and understands a few other Chinese dialects such as Cantonese and Foo Chow.

Doris is actively involved with her local church where she is currently leading study groups, is part of the music team, a Sunday school teacher, has a passion particularly with the youths and is one of the co-leaders of her church’s youth group. Apart from work and her involvement with church, her interests include reading, travelling and snowboarding.

Luke Hayward
Luke Hayward

Luke joined Parry Field Lawyers as an Associate in March of 2015 and works in the Commercial/Property team. In 2014, Luke was a finalist in the category of Young Private Practice Lawyer of the Year at the annual New Zealand Law Awards.

Luke graduated from the University of Canterbury and was admitted to the bar in 2009, at which stage he took up a position at a national law firm in Wellington.
In 2011 Luke and his wife travelled to the UK for their OE after accepting a one year fixed position at Harrow School in London, one of the UK’s most prestigious boarding schools.

Luke has many interests outside of work. Most notably, Luke is an experienced rugby referee, having been a member of the Canterbury Rugby Referees’ Association and the Wellington Rugby Referees’ Association over the past seven years. Luke is also heavily involved in Canterbury club cricket and in particular the Lancaster Park-Woolston Cricket Club. Luke sits on the Management Committee of the club and manages the premier men’s side. Luke is also involved in St Stephens Anglican Church in Shirley and enjoys playing music and spending time with his family, in particular his wife and young son, Joel.

Viv Zhang
Viv Zhang

Viv has a Law degree from Taiyuan University in China, a Masters in Law (Agency and International Trade) from the University of Canterbury and has recently been admitted to the Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor in New Zealand. Viv’s areas of practice are Immigration, Commercial, Property and Trust Law.

Viv is fluent in Mandarin and has considerable experience in assisting Asian Clients with legal matters having been trained in law in both China and New Zealand. This gives Viv the unique ability to understand and appreciate the similarities and differences between the two legal systems. With this special attribute and with the support and resources provided by Parry Field Lawyers, Viv is very well equipped to help Chinese Clients who are looking to immigrate to or invest in New Zealand.

Viv’s interests include swimming and reading.

Irene Chua
Irene Chua

Irene joined Parry Field in September 2016 having graduated from Victoria University of Wellington with a double degree in Law and Biomedical Science (majoring in Genetics and Molecular Pathology). Irene was admitted to the bar in September 2016. She primarily does work in the area of Property, Commercial and Immigration Law.

Irene is fluent in Malay and Mandarin, allowing her to assist Asian clients.

Outside work, she enjoys reading, cooking and skiing. Having moved from Wellington to Christchurch, she is looking forward to exploring her new city.

Judith Bullin
Judith Bullin

Judith joined Parry Field Lawyers in 2014 having recently graduated from the University of Otago with a double degree in Law and Commerce majoring in Accounting. Judith was admitted to the Bar in March 2014 and works in our commercial and property team.

Judith enjoyed volunteering at the Dunedin Community Law Centre and is passionate about helping people understand and apply the law to their situation and find practical solutions that best meet their needs.

Outside of the law, Judith enjoys playing the piano, baking and reading. She and her husband have just bought their first home and are looking forward to testing out their DIY skills.

Chris Field
Chris Field

Christine re-joined Parry Field Lawyers in 2016. She previously worked at the firm from 1984 to 1989. She is a highly experienced legal executive who has worked in a range of areas including property, trusts and estates. Before coming back to Christchurch she worked in Wellington for 27 years including 14 years at a major national law firm. She has returned “home” to be closer to her mother.

Her new role with our property and trusts teams includes assisting our Hokitika office and supporting the work that comes from the Coast.

Her specialist areas include advising on:

· Wills, family trusts and asset protection, and estate administration; and
· Subdivisions and easements including the creation of land covenants.

Chris is a Registered Affiliate of the NZ Institute of Legal Executives, and has a BA from Canterbury University with a double major in Art History and Classics.

Outside work her interests include hiking and gardening.

Ruth Judkins

Ruth’s area of practice includes residential property transactions but also includes Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney and Trusts.

Vinesh Prakash
Vinesh Prakash

Vinesh administers the firm’s estates and assists with property conveyancing matters. He joined Parry Field Lawyers in 2008.
Vinesh came to New Zealand from Fiji with his wife and son. He built up fourteen years experience working in Fiji with a law firm based in Lautoka City, beginning as a junior conveyancing clerk in 1994 and progressing his way to the senior level.

Outside office hours Vinesh enjoys soccer, cultural music and community work. He is dedicated to the Fiji-Indian community and currently holds the positions of Public Relations Officer, Secretary and Sports Coordinator in the Christchurch Fiji Cultural Education Social & Sports Association. Vinesh is also a member of the Indian Social Cultural Club, Christchurch Multi Cultural Council and Indian Cultural Group.

Vinesh with his wife is operating Jalsa Fiji Radio, the only Fiji-Indian Radio programme in Christchurch on Plains FM 96.9 a few hours every week. Jalsa Fiji Radio was a finalist in 2014 NZ Radio Awards.
